Vacation Diary

Megan Chase at Perimeter Gallery

We really needed a vacation. I didn't know how tired I was until we were into week 2! We promised ourselves that we would do only what we really wanted to do. That involved going to Mt. Desert to stay at the old-fashioned Claremont Hotel and hiking on the carriage roads in Acadia National Park; several occasions of eating and buying vegetables at Chases Daily, where I had the best blueberry tart of my life this past Thursday afternoon. We saw Megan Chase's gorgeous paintings there also. We went to the wonderful Thuya Garden. We went "a-berrying" as my dear Henry David Thoreau would call it, and made black raspberry crisp. We saw cherished family and went to the Five Islands lobster pound, and to the beach with nieces and nephews. Our darling son came for a visit, and the three of us picnicked at Ocean Point. We helped to save a man who had gone overboard off his boat and had spent an hour and a half in cold, cold water! We went to Sturbridge Village, and to Ikea to stock up on pretty paper napkins. I even made some art. We watched Agatha Christie's Poirot movies until we dropped. I re-read Death Comes for the Archbishop (such a beautiful, beautiful book) for our next book group, and the incredible Art & Fear, by David Bayles and Ted Orland. You never know what will happen in any span of time, but you can bet it will be packed with life...especially if you are a lover of life.

Peter Voshefski

I saw a show of Peter Voshevski's work at the Perimeter Gallery at Chase's in Belfast, Maine this weekend. The top four images are from that show, and the bottom three images were obtained from the internet. What I really liked about the work is the delicacy and obsessiveness, and the supports he uses for the small paintings. He is using a thin plywood in many cases, which has been meticulously sanded and rubbed with paint to create this well-crafted surface. I love the way he just sinks in there and paints dots to his hearts content. You can see more about this artist, living and teaching in New Mexico, here. I wish the Perimeter Gallery had a website, but they do not.

Freddy Lafage

If you live in Maine you ought to come and see this show! Even if you don't live in Maine you should come and see this show, but let's be realistic. This is the work of Freddy Lafage, a Maine artist, and the show is at the Perimeter Gallery in Belfast, which is also Chase's Daily...my favorite restaurant. You have until February 26th to see this work. I can't find a website for him, but he does show regularly here as I think he is part of the family who own Chase's.

Potato Post

Well we do live in Maine, so potatoes are a big deal. And these are pretty fantastic potatoes! Chase's Daily in Belfast has all kinds of varieties. And they are beautifully packaged and presented, of course. Because this is Chase's. We bought German Butterball Potatoes, and then had to make home fries for breakfast. I can't even describe how good.

Holiday Cheer

A friend is visiting this week, so we went up to Chases's for lunch yesterday, and did a little shopping and "driving around to look at the Lights". Remember that? We used to do that when I was a kid. We found some pretty impressive ones. Chase's has a new show of small works and some great amaryllis varieties for forcing if you are into that...which I am.

Karen MacDonald at Chase's Daily

Karen MacDonald's work is up at Chase's Daily in Belfast, Maine until November 28th. The work covers the long wall and goes up to the ceiling. It includes hundreds of cardboard constructions which layer an amazing variety of shapes and sizes to create this wonderful in-depth exploration of a medium. There are also some framed works that are gorgeous. Check it out if you can. I could not find a website or blog for Karen, so if anyone knows of one please leave me a comment.

Karen Gelardi at Chase's Daily

Karen Gelardi's beautiful work is up at Chase's Daily in Belfast right now. I love the banners and the bitmap drawings. Her skill and imagination are so refreshing to my spirit.

A Nice Weekend

This weekend was beautiful here in Maine. The air was dry and cool and it was sunny. We took a little time out and went up to Head Tide to look at this beautiful old church. We sat on the lawn and walked around a little mowed field. We imagined bringing family up here for a picnic when everyone arrives in a few weeks for a family wedding. It was a day to make you grateful. Sunday we went up to Chase's with a friend. The art is by Ben Pritchard. I just love that place.

Chase's Daily

We get real excited about this kind of thing up here in Maine! This is the farmer's market at Chase's Daily in Belfast. The artist keeping company with the vegetables is Megan Brady. This is my favorite restaurant in Maine. Maybe anywhere. I had a grilled cheese and tomato sandwich and a big pile of wok seared kale. I know you think I'm nuts, but there is just something about the mix of care, purity, art, funkiness, and yumminess that I just love.
