Sophie Truong shares Sharon Etgar

Thanks to Sophie Truong, here, I have been introduced to Sharon Etgar. She sews in old ledgers, among other things. You can see more at her website,  here. She is showing in NYC currently at  Davis & Langdale. The idea of a stitched diary is very appealing. Sophie did some new work this winter at the Mills Gallery in Boston. The show was composed of a group of artists showing their process in real time. Here is some of what Sophie worked on.

And Justine Hand of Designskool Blog did a studio visit with Sophie earlier this month. Check it out here. Just in case you don't know, Sophie also makes beautiful handmade leather  goods which she sells from her shop, here, and at select shows.

Nui Project

The Nui Project is a body of fiber work, mostly embroidery, done by a group of textile artists in Kagoshima, Japan. The artists have intellectual disabilities. For this project the artists have used ready-made shirts and have embroidered them, and then offered them for sale. There is a great article here, in HandEye magazine. There is a book published as well, which I believe is in two volumes. I got the following images from a blog post, here, at Day In and Day Out blog.

Dana Barnes

Textile artist Dana Barnes seems to be able to do anything with fiber. I love the old-fashioned braided rug updated to something extraordinary. The colors are what get me too. Rich and deep, and the soft neutrals. And her studio looks pretty amazing. Her website is here, and you can go over here to see a blog post where I found many of these photos. 

Lizz Aston

Lizz Aston is Canadian artist who works in paper and fiber, and porcelain. Her website is here. Her blog is here. The delicacy, intricacy and inventiveness of her work is captivating. Go over here , the World of Threads Festival blog, to read an in-depth interview where she describes her process and influences.  Most of the photos here came from that site. And never mind how young she is to have done this massive amount of work!

Child's Own Studios

What a great idea. Child's Own Studios is a business that makes custom toys based on children's drawings. Go over here to see many more examples and to read a little about the Vancouver- based operation. There is a Flickr studio stream here also.

Sonya Philip

Sonya Philip is a fiber artist based in San Francisco. I have followed her work in various places over the last couple of years. Here is what she is doing right now. It's a project called 100 Acts of Sewing, and it is all about empowering us to sew for ourselves. I love this idea on so many levels, especially that we can learn to buy less and make more. Yay! Lisa Hochstein

Lisa Hochstein is currently living and showing in Santa Cruz, California. I'd seen many of her collages circulating on Pinterest of late, but had not seen her fiber art until I visited her website, here. Her paper collages in the past couple of years have been done with torn vintage sheet music covers, or other salvaged paper. The collages are fairly small, whereas the collaged and stitched fabric works are larger, and also done on salvaged fabric, and sugar and salt sacks.

Tamar Branitzky

Tamar Branitzky is a textile designer in Tel-Aviv. Her process is to employ printing, hand painting, embroidery, sewing, burning and collage all in the same piece. She says she likes to see the different ways these layered processes evolve in the work. Take a look at her website here.
